Fried Ravilios with Curried Butternut Squash and Goat Cheese

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, November 26, 2013

I fell so hard when I was hiking a few weeks back.      I had thought for sure that I had broke my ankle.    As I sat in Urgent Care waiting to see a doctor I mused over how many times I have been hurt and yet I never break bones.      This fall I had taken …

Just Like Heaven

By Amber Woods on Sunday, November 24, 2013

You Soft and only You Lost and lonely You Strange as angels Dancing in the deepest oceans Twisting in the water You’re just like a dream Daylight licked me into shape I must have been asleep for days And moving lips to breathe her name I opened up my eyes And found myself alone alone …

How to Properally Use a Wag Bag

By Amber Woods on Saturday, November 23, 2013

Before hiking Mt Whitney the Lone Pine Forest Ranger instructed our group that any one hiking on the Mt Whitney Trail had to use a Wag Bag to get rid of their human waste while on the mountain.    At the Lone Pine Ranger Station they had a delightful diagram showing just how to use …

Adventures of the Incredible Exploding Pants

By Amber Woods on Saturday, November 23, 2013

Well today was a little bit random. I’d just like to say, I have no idea when I ripped the crotch out of my pants today, but I have a feeling it was when I fell on the ice as I was leaving my home this morning at seven A.M. for work      Then I …

Zuppa Toscana Soup; Mountain Version

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 21, 2013

Zuppa Toscana Soup is an Olive Garden favorite.    No this mountain version is not made with squirrel. This is just the creamy version of this Italian soup I make in my mountain kitchen.    I actually loathe the Olive Garden and fake Italian food.   I actually thought I hated Italian food until my best friend dragged …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
