Toxic Friendships

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, July 15, 2014

One of the hardest things in life is letting go of a friendship.       It consumes your thoughts.      You think of the good times, the hikes through mountain forests and to shear granite peaks and you remember the inside jokes and how you hated him as he pushed …

A Camping Cook Out Challenge

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 13, 2014

You know you are an inventive cook when you can make a gourmet meal out of nothing.      The boys I’m hiking Mt Whitney with are hours behind me ( I hope!) on the trail still.      I got back something like three hours before them and that is with taking long and frequent …

Who Hikes For Twelve Hours a Day Just For Fun?

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 13, 2014

The only sound I can hear is the cicadas in the trees, the river crashing through a canyon far off and the fish jumping.      Obviously the fish are jumping because I forgot my back packing fishing pole.      I’m trying not to be to upset about all the hungry, tasty trout every where, …

I Know How Money Feels

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 10, 2014

Years ago my friends and I took their Doberman hiking on a super hot day down a dusty trail.      Money girl, their dog kept stopping on the trail and whimpering and staring at us with big sad eyes and it took us a few miles to figure out what was wrong.      Her …

One Hell of a Fight

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Finally, Trail Crest, all 13,000 feet of it.      I may not have made it to the top of the mountain today!      But I put up one hell of a fight!     Last year I did this hike in something like 14 hours and I had grand plans to do it a lot faster …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
