Why Does the Ocean Hate me?

By Amber Woods on Thursday, February 12, 2015

It was a beautiful day on the water, waves crashing against a giant vessel cutting through the Coral Sea. We were on our way to the outer reef for a day of snorkeling fun. It sounds like a brillant adventure but for one problem; I couldn’t stop puking. Once again I found myself asking, why …

I Love Manly

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 9, 2015

Today the ocean tried to murder me but I did not give in! I don’t care if the ocean tried to make me her bitch today; I still love Manly! Manly Beach is a cute little subdivision of Sydney, Australia. You take a ferry ride from Sydney Harbor about twenty minutes across the bay to …

Today I put on some goggles, swallowed some pool water, kicked off and learned how to swim. Hi. I’m Amber. I’m 34 years old and yes, today I swam for the first time. It could be considered pathetic to some people maybe that I’m a thirty four year old none swimmer and I drag inner …

Easy Monsoon Living

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, February 3, 2015

Monsoon weather means living in a rain poncho on our tropical vacation. It also means all of our belongings smell like mold. As truly awesome, beautiful and amazing as this tropical island is I am tired of humidity and sand. It has been ninety degrees most days with near ninety percent humidity. Even …

Gnocchi with Pancetta and Pistachio Pesto

By Amber Woods on Friday, January 30, 2015

Waking up in Sydney reminds me that I don’t like the city.      We spent the last four days vacationing on a tropical island off the coast of Australia. It was quiet, secluded and beautiful. Giant monitor lizards slowly walked across the hiking trails into the jungle giving us dirty looks.   …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
