How Can Sourdough Starter Make Your Spring Baking Sensational?

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 21, 2017

To some people sourdough might just be a slightly sour white bread or possibly an almost forgotten story about the gold rush years in California. It doesn’t mater how many times you have been to that famous wharf in San Francisco, once you have made your own sourdough starter from scratch it blows your mind …

How not to get Airlifted Out of a Slot Canyon

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, May 17, 2017

I’m sure if you asked anyone in our family who had the biggest chance of ending up on the news or having to be airlifted/rescued out of a dangerous canyon at night they would say it would me. You don’t spend your days hiking to the tallest peaks in southern California and tumbling down some …

Coconut Chutney Rice with Sun Dried Tomatoes

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 14, 2017

On a snowy afternoon in a mountain ski town you need a warm or maybe even medium spicy meal to invigorate your senses. Indian food is the absolute best thing on a snowy winters day. Plain rice is fine with any great spicy Indian meal but my take on plain rice, Coconut Chutney Rice with …

Talk Derby To Me

By Amber Woods on Friday, May 12, 2017

This is the mostly true somewhat embarrassing tale of my Kentucky derby day in 2017. It began with a rainy drive to work through the metropolis Los Angeles area on the as always crowded freeways of Southern California. I left my Alpine mountain home at 6000 feet and ascended into the clouds down below along with about …

Sriracha Candied Bacon Jerky

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 9, 2017

I love those early spring days waking up at dawn to watch the sunrise from my porch with a steaming coconut Chai Latte and smelling spring time on the mountain air. It’s almost as Sriracha Candied Bacon Jerky!   We may be in the midst of a terrible drought here in Southern California but for some …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
