My Love Affair with Collagen

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 26, 2018

Late July 2018. I woke up early, poured some coffee in my mouth and before you could say, wagbag, I was out the door, in the car and driving towards the trailhead. Barely after dawn in the mountains of Southern California, I made my way up the steep trail in the morning light, heavy pack …

Saddlebag Lakes and Twenty Lakes Basin Madness

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 19, 2018

The smell of wild onions greeted me as my morning began on the Saddlebag Lake Loop. This is going to be an easy hike, no drama, perhaps find a future lake for some Golden Trout action next trip to the eastern Sierras, I thought to myself. All the reviews I had read of the Saddlebag …

The Party Poopers hiking guide

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 12, 2018

Vacation in the high Sierras means hiding from swarms of mosquitos, day drinking to forget about said mosquitos, nights at the carnival riding the Party Pooper and babysitting two pups who are not always on their best behavior. Vacation; Day five. Eastern Sierras. Let’s go for a little hike. To a big ass mountain. It …

What I did on my Summer Vacation; My Dogs Version

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 5, 2018

Today in the woods of the eastern Sierras, Carly the trail dog did all the things. She almost got lost in the Inyo National Forest, she had a fight with her best friend and she forded multiple creeks and streams between Rock Creek Lake and Chickenfoot Lake. After a long day on the trails with …

Where the Hell is Yost Lake?

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 29, 2018

I don’t know why hikers and other outdoor adventurers don’t talk about scenic Yost Lake out of June Lake. Maybe it’s the insane amount of altitude gain you hike upward in the first mile of this race up to resort level and the meadows. When I started this upward journey up above silent blue June …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
