Anglo Indian Mint Chutney with Serranos and Mango

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 8, 2018
mint chutney

Today amongst the falling fall leaves floating in the mountain breeze, I voted for the first time in the city of Big Bear Lake and I also made the most unbelievable mint chutney. I tried to do my civic duty with my mail in ballot but I filled out one of the state propositions very, …

By Amber Woods on Monday, October 22, 2018

After a gorgeous fall day of hiking mountain trails and splitting and stacking half a cord of wood a big dish of hot delicious carbs sounds fantastic. But we try to ignore those amazing carbs in our household so how about serving up a a big bowl of southern Indian inspired cauliflower rice instead? If …

Three years ago every step I took was agony even on a gorgeous autumn day such as this as I trekked my favorite leave covered trails in our national forest just steps out our back door. My sciatica was back and it was killing me. Three years ago, not quite so healthy and holistic Amber …

How to Make Tomato Pasta Sauce Like an Italian Grandmother

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Pasta sauce is not really my thing. Which may be slightly surprising as I used to be a runner, and runners love to carbo load, right? Not this ex trail runner. I liked my cheese and veggies and when it came to carbs, well, I could take those sugar and white flour filled babies or …

Cardamom Clove and Ginger Applesauce

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 9, 2018

This autumn fall came early to our neighborhood. What I mean by that is Labor Day weekend it may still have been eighty degrees in our neighborhood but we lost a quarter of our apple tree in one snap and we had a plethora of apples on our hands. Oh, poop. “Who wants to take some …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
