High-Protein Keto Smoothie for People Who Read Labels

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 12, 2026

I have spent the last twenty years being deeply suspicious of tofu. Not a casual “meh, not my thing” kind of suspicion, but a full-on side-eye from across the grocery store level of fear. After having non-tumorous breast lumps removed in my twenties (TWENTIES, Wow, so long ago) and watching several women in my family …

By Amber Woods on Monday, May 11, 2026

Good morrow fellow countrymen! I truly did not mean to walk a 5K today my dear lords and ladies! But when you are adventuring to ye Olde Renaissance Pleasure Faire, well you have to roll with the punches (Or the jousting) If you are not having an adventure even just arriving at the Rennaisance Pleasure …

Cabin Queen Cheddar Corn Bombs

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 9, 2026

The rest of the country may be defrosting this week, putting on pretty springtime rompers and celebrating spring but here at 7,000 feet in these mountains of southern California, early May mornings mean putting away all garden goodies I took out on that one rare seventy-degree day. There is a snowstorm looming and that makes …

Keto Hawaiian Pizza Bites; Pineapple on Pizza, Cry Harder

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, May 6, 2026

Here in 2026, if you use AI to create high-quality food photos in the wilderness — mostly because in real life you’re inhaling your keto charcuterie lunch like a feral raccoon before you can even unlock your phone — I can almost guarantee someone from a concrete jungle suburb with a name like Thousand Weeping …

Best Hikes Near Crestline – Trails Worth Sweating For

By Amber Woods on Monday, May 4, 2026

If you ask ChatGPT where to hike near Crestline, California, she’ll immediately try to send you to Big Bear Lake—which is great… if you feel like driving over an hour just to go for a walk in the woods. But if you’re staying in Crestline or around Lake Gregory, chances are you’re looking for hikes …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
