Living high on the hog in a Pre-Pandemic 2020

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 28, 2021

A year ago today I was up to some pretty crazy shenanigans. I went to an indoor restaurant with friends! And we shared a plate of appetizers! It was a beautiful cold March morning working at Santa Anita Park and between races and work stuff(You know, like petting horses), I chatted with my friend Amy …

Bangalore Style “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Chicken” Butter Tofu

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 25, 2021

Four years ago when I resided in Bangalore India for a month there were days I ate Butter Chicken for Breakfast lunch and dinner. I’m not kidding. There were not a lot of things I loved about the hustle and bustle and cow shit-filled streets of Bangalore but what I really loved was being in …

Spinach Bran Muffins, a Healthy St Patrick’s Day Snack

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 13, 2021

Happy St Patrick’s Day 2021! This St Patrick’s Day is like no other in history. A global pandemic is making it nearly impossible to drink green beer with friends in a crowded bar. If I can’t partake in beer with unnatural food coloring in it then I might as well head in the opposite direction. …

Cancel Culture, The Hungry Mountaineer and the Snow Pigs

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 11, 2021
cancel culture

Today for the first time in my life cancel culture became my reality. I was put in Facebook jail for insulting our lovely tourists who urinate in our front yards and start bonfires in the ski resort parking lots here in this alpine town. I had no idea that calling these uncaring human beings Snow …

Muttar Peas and Tofu Masala with Cottage Cheese

By Amber Woods on Monday, March 8, 2021

If I can say one positive thing about the year 2020, it was the year I became a better Indian chef. Did I master the art of baking crispy fall apart in your mouth buttery with ghee parathas? Not a chance. Did I learn how to get the batter just right for holiday Anglo-Indian rose …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
