Moon Light Bat filled Trail Run

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, May 8, 2013

I watched the bats flitting across the darkening sky ahead of me as my feet flew over the dirt road.     It was almost eight p.m. and it was getting dark fast in this jungle like forest.     I’d hoped on my twilight ten mile run this evening to see some wild life; deer or bear, …

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 5, 2013

When I was 18 my friends and I used to sneak off to Mexico.      Okay, for the life of me, I can’t remember if I told my parents I was going off to Mexico with Jenn or not. On one hand I was not a teenager who lied to her parents, ever. On …

That Girl in the Red Hat

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 4, 2013

I tried to run Mt Baldy with friends the other weekend.   I failed in so many ways.   I did not reach the top of Mt San Antonio, more commonly known as Mt Baldy, at 10,006  feet.   I also lost my friends before the massive hike/ run even began and ended up doing the whole thing solo.   Even with …

Yucca Plants, Cacti and Pine Trees

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, April 30, 2013

This part of the mountain is very drastically different some times.       We are so close to Joshua Tree National Park and when I run in this alpine forest I see everything from Yuccas, to Joshua Trees, to cacti, to wild larkspur and juniper trees.     Today I ran a brand new trail that was …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
