Sweet Potato Macarons

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 26, 2013

I kind of hate fall, but yet I want to love it at the same time.    Fall excites me as all summer long I bitch and moan about how hot it is and how badly I want to go running but it’s so damn hot.    I may love to run but I hate to …

Sage Pesto Mac N Cheese with Butternut Squash, Fontina and Goat Cheese

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, September 25, 2013

It’s been two hours now and I am still exhausted.    Bear Creek kicked my ass today.    Today was the first time, ever, in about six tries in two years that I managed to hike and run to Bear Creek. Young Sequoia trees on the trail    It was a three hour ordeal …

The Last Days of Summer

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, September 24, 2013

When I see the city limit sign in the distance I usually put the pedal down and drive too fast.    As soon as I see the sign, leaving 45 zone I drive my Subaru as fast as I can through the wide sweeping turns.   It feels good to turn up the music, windows down …

The Way America Was

By Amber Woods on Saturday, September 21, 2013

Yukon River      Our entire trip through Alaska was amazing but to truly experience Alaska, or as the slogan goes “The way America was” you either have to fly on a bush plane into the middle of nowhere or you need to survive the Dalton Highway. This is real Alaska; its surreal. There is no …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
