My Face Hurts and a Recipe for Carbanara Macaroni and Cheese

By Amber Woods on Monday, September 2, 2013

Any one who knows me knows that I eat. A lot. A good friend once told me that I talk about food so much that if you were to speak to me on the phone, having never met me, one would think I would be a rather plump lady as ALL I TALK ABOUT …

1,600 Feet Below Duck’s Pass Lake

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 1, 2013

My last day of my Sierras vacation I had plans to do a epic run in the forest.   I had talked to friends who knew the area better than me and a few different hikes had been recommended.   I decided to do Duck’s Pass up near Lake Mary and Mammoth Mountain.   The Duck’s Pass …

Day at the Lake

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 30, 2013

On the third day of my vacation we had plans to do a five mile round trip hike to Parker Lake to fish at the lake hidden deep in the Ansel Adams Wilderness.   It was going to be awesome!   We were going to catch so many feisty native trout!   Sure it would be a …

Chicken Dijon Stew

By Amber Woods on Thursday, August 29, 2013

It is the first few weeks of August and it feels like autumn in my little mountain town.   As much as I love autumn, fall leaves, pumpkins and baking I am just not done with summer yet.   I want one more dip in my favorite swimming hole.   I want to sit on a beach …

Pastries and Earth Quakes?

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 26, 2013

When the toilet vibrates something is wrong.      I had just driven one third of the way home from my Eastern Sierras vacation. I had been up since five a.m. I ran ten miles in the mountains with a two thousand foot altitude gain and than hiked for a mile near Convict Lake.     I was a bit tired …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
