The Mountains are Calling

San G or Bust!

By Amber Woods on Sunday, April 20, 2014

I had just fallen down a twenty foot snowy slope. Right after the fall I was still grasping my left hand, a little panicked that it might be broken but still hobbling slowly and carefully up hill.       I don’t think I have ever hated switch backs like I did in that moment. Which …

Beaver Cheese

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, April 16, 2014

“What the hell is Beaver Cheese?”             Before Trav can even answer me I move on to my next and completely logical question              “And who the hell milks the beavers?”         ” And how the hell do you milk a beaver?!”      If we …

The Day San G made me her Bitch

By Amber Woods on Monday, April 14, 2014

“Be careful, it’s icy”      The words had barely left Trav’s mouth and I’d already lost balance on the slippery icy ledge.       I was sliding down the icy mountain fast and my calves, in short yoga pants burned as they scraped down the left hands side of my body.       I felt like …

Under The Midnight Sun

Meanwhile in Alaska….

By Amber Woods on Friday, April 11, 2014

A summer day in Alaska means fishing for fresh salmon on the Copper River.     It means fishing ALL DAY on the Copper River.     It means really feeling that we are Californians and not local Alaskans at all when we do not catch anything.  (even though we had been vacationing in the forty ninth …

Carrot Ginger Jalapeno Juice Shot

By Amber Woods on Sunday, April 6, 2014

I wouldn’t drink a cup of this, I mean unless you enjoy sitting on the toilet and crying.   As a shot (and come on! Who doesn’t take shots at ten a.m!?) this is a great little breakfast drink.   I don’t actually shoot it; I sip this tasty breakfast beverage.   This is a great immune booster …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
