Coconut Breakfast Quinoa with Dried Apples and Spiced Nuts

By Amber Woods on Monday, October 6, 2014

If there is one food I do not really enjoy it is those Quaker oatmeal packets that most people think us a great breakfast while camping.        Sure they are easy.        Yes they are light weight to throw in your Kielty pack when going on a week long …

Journey to the lake of Ass Holes

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Yesterday I just wanted to hike some new trails.      We ended up hiking to the lake of assholes which was way more scenic than one would think.       It was actually a very pleasant experience as opposed to what one would think when assholes are involved.       …

When you take Cat Lady on Vacation…

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 28, 2014

Babe! There’s an animal outside the tent!” I’m huddling in my nice warm sleeping bag. It’s two a.m. And I am very confused.       “What?”        “There’s an animal outside the tent! Do you hear that noise? What is that noise? It sounds like purring!” I’m shaking him …

Rock Creek and the Little Lakes Valley

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 26, 2014

The first day of our Eastern Sierras vacation we decided to do a little hike. We had sat in the truck for five hours driving from Southern California and by the time we hit the turn off at Tom’s Place our hiking boots were ready to touch the dirt.       …

C-O-U-G-A-R-S and a recipe for Avocado Wontons

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 25, 2014

I really do not understand why no one can spell cougar.     I live on Cougar Lane and every time I have to call the cable company or the water company or an electrician I have to spell out C-O-U-G-A-R about ten times.    Than I have to explain what a cougar is.     …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
