Mango Curried Chicken Salad

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 11, 2016

Summer days were meant to relax at the lake, fishing pole in hand or watch July thunder storms on lazy afternoons from the front porch. I am so thrilled to say that this has been my summer so far. This morning I woke up at dawn and hauled my mountain bike down Van Dusen Canyon …

Big Bear, A Simpler Way of Life; and We Love it That Way!

By Amber Woods on Saturday, July 9, 2016

Every morning our dogs go bat shit crazy when they see the beautiful Huskies. Our neighbors have three absolutely out of this world beautiful Huskies and they are easily three times the size of our big dog. I’m pretty sure our dogs hate them because the Huskies are so beautiful and they are two mutts. …

Back in the Day in Alaska

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 7, 2016

You know you are on vacation with your best friends when you spend two weeks bickering and it’s still the best vacation or your life. This would be two weeks in Alaska celebrating the summer solstice at the Arctic circle. As we sweated through a California summer solstice earlier in the week I was taken …

Don’t go to Mexico!

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 4, 2016

Everyone warned us “Don’t go to Mexico!” Friends and family could barely contain their hysteria. “The gangs! The drugs!” They screamed, clutching their chests in paranoia! “The beaches! The margaritas!” I answered them as I packed my bags. It had been seven years since I had crossed the border at San Ysidro. The running joke, …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
