By Amber Wood on Sunday, December 15, 2024

Ho Ho Ho are you ready for some fat-ass Christmas pie? Hardly anyone in my family likes eggnog, but my dad and I love it. This holiday Christmas Eggnog Pie is so very easy and delicious. It’s a Christmas tradition that everyone in our family rolls their eyes when I show up with the Eggnog …

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, December 11, 2024

It’s finally starting to feel like the holidays here at over six thousand feet. Our mountain town in southern California is covered in the first dusting of fresh snow. Nothing brings joy to my heart like fresh snow. Okay, maybe deep-fried potatoes bring me a lot of happiness. Indulge in starchy goodness It’s okay, you …

It can be a happy holiday once again with these healthy homemade Sourdough Sweet Potato Chapatis! Masoor Dal with Venison

By Amber Wood on Monday, December 2, 2024

If you are not cycling through the fall colors blasting Broadway musicals as loudly and ridiculously as you can why you are just not enjoying autumn! I mean what else says autumn more than Fatboy Slim chanting “Because we can, can, can” to loud techno music? Seriously though this could be the most absurd song …

Brine a turkey, it’s easier then you would think!

By Amber Wood on Friday, November 29, 2024

I had to go on a snowshoe adventure this morning to collect some fresh juniper berries to complete my Thanksgiving meal. It was time to brine my first turkey and nothing says happy Thanksgiving like foraging for fresh ingredients. My mycophagist cousin is bringing a lovely freshly foraged morel mushroom soup for the big family …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
