High-Protein Keto Smoothie for People Who Read Labels

I have spent the last twenty years being deeply suspicious of tofu.

Not a casual “meh, not my thing” kind of suspicion, but a full-on side-eye from across the grocery store level of fear. After having non-tumorous breast lumps removed in my twenties (TWENTIES, Wow, so long ago) and watching several women in my family get diagnosed with breast cancer around the same time, soy quietly exited my life like a sketchy ex. No scene. No goodbye. Just gone.

Back in my 20s, when I was way more fun and also terrified of tofu.

That whole era—circa 2008—was also when I decided to “get healthy.” I started running, got very into HIIT, and briefly believed my body was indestructible. (Spoiler: it was not.) A long parade of injuries eventually derailed those plans, and here we are in 2026 with my 45-year-old body making noises it absolutely should not be making when I stand up.

So now I’m easing back in gently. Think: 36-hour fasts on Mondays for autophagy and inflammation, infrared mat burrito sessions, magnesium oil baths, and yes—even some hippie-adjacent CBD oil for pain. If wellness trends were a buffet, I currently have a little bit of everything on my plate.

Then came the plot twist.

My healthcare provider recently ran a BRCA gene test, and guess what? I’m negative for both breast and ovarian cancer. Which means I am officially no longer terrified of tofu. Turns out my lifelong nemesis was just an innocent soy product this whole time.

And here’s the real confession: I actually love tofu. Like, weirdly love it. Crispy tofu has always been one of my favorite snacks—I just used to eat it with a side of guilt and mild panic. Now? I’m living my best foodie life and deep frying tofu like it’s going out of style.

The Smoothie I Didn’t Think I’d Be Drinking in 2026

This smoothie is the 2026, health-hacked version of my longtime favorite Almond Butter and Banana Smoothie. I adore the banana version, but the sugar-obsessed Cookie Monster living in my brain needs to calm down. Enter tofu: creamy, neutral, protein-packed, and shockingly good at pretending it’s a banana without the sugar spike.
