This morning I ran as the sun rose among the pine trees. I ran with sunglasses on and eyes squinted half shut. This was not because I had returned home to my cabin at midnight and flung my exhausted body out of bed before dawn at four, but due to the fact that my eyes f’ing hurt. This was the fifth day of eye pain and my stress level was at an all time high as I am going on vacation in a few day’s and no amount of eye pain, hip hurt or broken felines is going to stop me.
My stress began when the fog moved in. Spring fog is glorious. The fog level is low and thick and cool and misty. The fog only reaches about four thousand feet in the spring time and that means anyone above that, like myself and my home at over six thousand feet is draped in shiny happiness. If you love fog, I mean.
It also mean instead of one hundred degrees and humid in the valley where I work it will be sixty and drizzling. I love this weather and it fucking hates me.
My hip hates the cold and when my hip hurts I don’t run and when I don’t run I watch horse racing and bake cookie’s and talk to my cats and write blogs about my cats because obviously I’m not out running the PCT.
This weather is a trade off. Hate the sciatica the baromic pressure change causes me love the fog the rain and cold.
As I said I’m leaving for three full days of camping, beach, hiking and wine tasting in a few days. So why is my cat broken again now of all days? My cat Sierra always gets this rash on his ear and it came back again. I have medication for it but the medication isn’t working. I need to take him to the vet asap before I leave for the central coast. By some miracle my vet had one appointment available tomorrow, and it just happened to be in the one time slot I had. How lucky am I? That’s what I said before Sierra would hiss none stop and try to bit the vet.
But back to today.
The two times I drove down the mountain today were stunningly gorgeous. Yes, I said two times, as in almost a hundred mile commute in one day to ultimately arrive at work almost on time at three ‘o one.
When the spring fog rolls in like this, it sits like a white puffy blanket over the valley below. You can see for hundreds of miles across this vast cloud cover as you drive across the rim of the mountain. It is a truly glorious sight. The clouds are so puffy, heavenly looking white and greys. The clear mountain blue skies are a stunning contrast to the miles and miles of fog.
This is what I admired as I began my sunrise run a little after four. I huffed and puffed my way four miles up and down Keller’s Peak Road. I saw one other car the whole time. It’s honestly exhausting and so very hard to pull my ass out of bed at four a.m. after working late nights, but its worth it to watch the pink clouds as the sun rises over a quiet forest. As I ran I watched the sun rise over the horizon, turning the green pine trees golden in the morning rays.
I felt so invigorated after my run, I went home and stripped all the nasty old eighties wallpaper off my bedroom and kitchen walls. It was oddly relaxing. I was quite pleased as well because it means I now have to update it with something like this marble wallpaper, whippee! I have a friend who can’t sit still long enough to meditate so she pulls weeds in her garden when she needs to clear her mind. I’ve always found this is a wonderful idea, as I cant sit still either. Today I found that pulling out old wallpaper is a zen like activity. Maybe its the hot steam from the wall paper steamer making my bedroom spa like, but I felt really relaxed and energized after that. Or maybe I got high off of seventies wall paper glue fumes.
Before ten o clock I managed to run four miles and rid my house of hideous wallpaper, go me.
I had a eye appointment to figure out what the hell was wrong with my face. My eye had been hurting for about a week at this point. No fun at all for me.
My eye appointment was going fine until the doctor dyed my eyes yellow. She put yellow dye in my eyes to try to see any damage. The doctor said it wouldn’t hurt, but I guess because my eyes we’re so irritated my eyes began to burn right away.
I started to get really hot as the doctor looked in both eyes and informed me both my corneas were scratched. She had this fancy eye inspecting contraption pressed up against my body and I felt constrained and couldn’t take off my sweater. As she began talking about corneas and the eye and using words like jello I started to feel queasy and just like that I passed out. I woke up, still in the chair, seconds later and so embarrassed. I felt better though and was just dying to get out of there, go to my car and drink some ice water.
My hand’s shook and now both of my eyes felt on fire as I put my contacts back in. The doctor had told me I needed to wear my glasses none stop for four days and absolutely no contact lenses, but I realized I had left my glassed on my kitchen counter, damn it.
As I walked out of there it was two o clock. I worked at three and on a magical traffic free day my commute is at least thirty minutes.
I called work explained the situation with my eyes and raced up that mountain I honked at a very hot guy in a jeep who was driving ssddlllooooowwwlllyy and looked so confused why I had honked at him
If I could read his gorgeous eyes, they we’re surely saying
“Someones honking at me? Pffft! Beautiful people don’t get honk at.”
Then with the adrenaline from my honk racing though my veins I flew by a sheriff going way over the speed limit. Some how he did not come after me, my lucky day.
Once home I flew inside grabbed the glasses and a five hour energy and I was back out the door. I hate wearing my glasses. The Sarah Plain look is not sexy on me.
I raced back down that mountain and some how made it back down in record time. I even had time to run into Von’s, pick up my prescription eye drops and make it to work only one minute late! It was a May Miracle!
