Fish On

The Best Fish Curry with Tamarind and Coconut Milk

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, August 14, 2019

“Fish on!” Those are the magical words anyone in the fishing community loves to hear. When I really started to get into fishing ten years ago I actually thought my friend John coined this term himself and it wasn’t until a few years ago when I met my boyfriend on a fishing trip and then …

Bambi and the Knife Welding Lunatic; A Hiker’s Tale or Fake News?

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, August 7, 2019

I pulled my aching body out of bed before dawn to go on a big ass hike. It was a few weeks into our month-long vacation, I mean, if you consider vacation hiking twenty miles every few days (Which I do!) I did not arise sleepy from the RV at dawn so my dog could …

Where the Cat People Come From

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, July 31, 2019

I come from a long line of crazy cat people. I spent my first day of the summertime with my brother and sister in law doing what crazy cat people do when they leave the cats alone at home for the day; Hiking mountain trails, taking selfies with wildflowers and kayaking the high seas of …

Be My Valentine and Get Me Some Damn Deet

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Six a.m. on the sagebrush thick trails near Sherwin Creek and thunderheads were forming in the distance near Bishop, California, big time. I’ve never in my life as a long-distance hiker been afraid of a little thunderstorm, so of course, I just kept on hiking up the deserted mountain trail. Truth be told I simply …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
