Pumpkin Spice White Russian Coffee

pumpkin spice

“What is that delightful odor? Could it be pumpkin spice…” If the dog smells like steer manure then it must be fall in our household. True story, it’s autumn, finally. Chilly night’s, the garden is dying a slow autumn death and I can finally wear my Ugg’s again. My boyfriend set out to fertilize our …

The first gust of chilly wind blowing into our mountain town means here comes fall! Fall is back with a vengenous as soon as the mosquitos stop biting, the days get a little colder and we have frost on the roofs in our neighborhood. It also has me frantically scrambling to cover my precious tomatoes …

Ein Prosit! Celebrating a Fantastic Oktoberfest on a Budget

It’s the most magical time of the year in Big Bear Lake! That spectacular fall leaves crunching underfoot month of the year when you can go for a fantastic autumn hike, it’s not too hot, the colors on the oak trees are extraordinary and best of all, you can enjoy a German pilsner outdoors after …

The Outdoorsy Gals Guide to a Sustainable September

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 27, 2019

To some gals, the first few days of fall might mean Ugg boots crunching through colorful fall leaves while chugging a sugar-filled Starbucks Pumpkin Patch Latte. (Those ladies probably spend their weekend’s power walking at the mall and paying two hundred dollars for a Free People sweater) I’m more of a crunchy granola, recycled fashion …

Elk Sweet Potato Chili

By Amber Woods on Saturday, September 21, 2019

I love camping and the outdoors with a passion but sometimes Mother Nature can be a real bitch. I feel like I have been tired and cold for the past twenty-six hours straight and would just love to be sitting by a fireplace somewhere with a hot mug of tea in between my freezing fingertips. …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
