Kombucha Squash Curry

By Amber Woods on Saturday, October 10, 2020

What do all the tastes, colors and smells of autumn have to do with India? India is a world of color and an explosion of flavors, a rainbow of yellows, oranges and pinks and then there are the smells; Most are good; A blend of cardamon seeds, zesty coriander, sharp clove and cinnamon found in …

Acorn Squash Ground Bison Enchiladas

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 4, 2020

It was August 20th, 2020 on an eastern Sierra mountain top and I was daydreaming about acorn squash. I had just turned forty years old on top of the tallest mountain in the continental United States. I was beyond exhausted after hiking up 6,000 feet of rocky mountain trails and maybe just a bit delusional …

Caramel Cinnamon Apples

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 24, 2020

Autumn days in the eastern Sierra mountains mean ruby red leaves falling out of aspen trees onto dusty trails. The weather gets cooler and so pleasant to hike in. I mean until that old high elevation wind picks up at above six thousand feet. The weather can go from pleasant to blustery real fast, especially …

Social Distance some Outdoor fun in the eastern Sierras during a Pandemic

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 20, 2020

It’s summertime 2020 and the eastern Sierra mountains are calling my name. My unbridled wanderlust is getting to me as this pandemic rages through the hot summertime months. If you are anything like me and my family you have been self quarantined since March 6th. You have become accustomed to wearing a mask every place …

Kerala Style Coconut Veggie Soup

2020 is such a ridiculous time to be living in and as we sit here, stuck in the smoky southland this fall, choking on gritty air from wildfires burning all over California, I do feel blessed that we were able to travel to India, to Goa and Kerala in the last few years. Last New …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
