Kung Pao with Shrimp, Sausage and Gochujang Candied Peanuts

By Amber Woods on Saturday, December 16, 2023

“Mountains that look like they would be impossible to travel through, they never fail to take my breath away.” Now that’s where I want to go on vacation. Wilderness vistas that take you back to a simpler time in a place without Rivian trucks and Monster Energy drink cans abandoned in even the most serene …

A San Felipe Road Trip

By Amber Woods on Monday, December 11, 2023

A lot of Californians are terrified of Baja California. Street tacos! Terrifying (Or delicious?) Cartels! (Not prevalent in the Baja Norte area most of the time) You can’t put Mexican petrol in your vehicle! (Yeah, you can, it’s the same 87 octane you get in the U.S.) Being terrified of a little Baja road trip …

Why should you Dry Roast Spices?

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 7, 2023

A typical day for me finds me out trekking trails with my puppy all morning. Then I have to rush home and get in the kitchen and start grinding spices. Homemade Curry Powder does not make itself! And how can I possibly create the best curries in Southern California without my own home-dry-roasted spices? If …

The Best Day Spas in North America

By Amber Woods on Saturday, December 2, 2023

There’s something about a two-month RV road trip and all the hijinks that come with that that has me thinking, I could use a spa day. Maybe it’s driving a 26,000-pound vehicle for seven thousand miles past North America’s largest lake. Maybe it’s the oppressive humidity of the south. Or maybe it’s all those puppy …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
