The Very Best Keto Breakfast Sandwich

By Amber Wood on Saturday, June 25, 2022

On days like this one where I work, I mean hike for eight hours straight, I might need a breakfast sandwich to fuel my body for the long day ahead. Sure, you could cruise through the Mcdonald’s drive-through for a sodium-soaked biscuit breakfast sandwich with powdered eggs, Velvetta cheese and is that hard mealy thing …

Fuzzy Wuzzy Mules Ears: Nearly a Bathroom Disaster Tale

By Amber Wood on Monday, June 20, 2022

Today I learned the hard way that mule’s ears are softer than RV toilet paper and it’s always a good idea for a hiker to carry an extra wag bag. Especially if that hiker had spicy Mexican food the night before. As a local expert on edible plants, I usually know just where to find …

The Happy Campers Wildfire Evacuation Plan

By Amber Wood on Thursday, June 16, 2022

No one expects to go on vacation and face the thought of being evacuated in the middle of the night. Camping vacations are for good times; Making smores around the campfire under the stars of the Milky Way, hiking sixteen miles a day through pine forests and swimming in alpine lakes. When you are faced …

Who wears short shorts? Hungry Mountaineers Do!

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, June 14, 2022

Summertime in a resort town. Sitting down in my backyard for the first time today I can literally feel the pine pollen landing on my arms. Good thing I don’t really care that much about getting dirtier than I already am. I spent the day trekking up a dusty mountain trail in my new Kuhl …

Chopped Kale Salad with a Vegan Coconut Curry Dressing

By Amber Wood on Saturday, June 11, 2022
Life with a senior dog

The whole valley was filled with the cutest fuzzy wild burros. It was just past dawn on a very chilly February morning. The high might have been above zero degrees. The donkeys did not care as they grazed on the first wild green grasses of a very early spring. The little baby donkeys scampered around …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
