Forty Nine Minutes

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 11, 2012

Final times were just posted from the Snow Shoe the Bear. My time was 49 minutes. Pretty slow in my opinion when the fastest women’s time was 32 minutes. I never said I was fast; never ever. I can run all day, but if I run fast I hyperventilate and get dizzy. I did however, …

Cougar Poop Trail Adventure

By Amber Woods on Monday, March 5, 2012

I’ve hiked at City Creek Ranger Station quite a few times and I’m always amazed by how much, well, shit there is on the trail. Last time we did this run, Jenn commented   “Some one must have been walking their herd of huskies up here!”     It’s a little annoying to have to dodge …

Snow Shoe the Bear

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 26, 2012

Today I ran my first 5 K race.    Yes, today I ran my first 5 K with out snow shoes. For months all I have been talking about how I’m running a snow shoe race. Well, for months I have also been complaining that there is no snow. These sixty degree February days are extraordinary …

Angry Cats that Hate Me

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 20, 2012

I’m currently freaking out a little bit.    Just a little.  At least I’m not covered in cobwebs, starving and shaking.   That would be my mountain cat Zion. He’s had a rough couple of days. Recently he made a new dog friend. By friend I mean he became acquainted with a friends Husky, who …

Life of Adventure
By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 19, 2012

It’s ten days until I will run my first 10 K.   I’ve had a few set backs.   Number one of course, is this la Nina winter we are having. We actually got a foot of snow in last weeks storm. This is the only real snow storm we have received this winter. When I …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
