Onxy Summit Hike

By Amber Woods on Friday, October 14, 2011

Even though its nearing Halloween, today it is almost eighty degrees in this mountain town. I’m in the mood to make some sausage and kale soup or maybe some roasted Autumn squash, but its a little to hot to turn on the oven today. So instead I’ll take my inflatable raft up to Big …

Porky Goat Log

By Amber Woods on Friday, October 14, 2011

Some people like me, enjoy that feeling of licking a fresh goat. I mean some people really do like goat cheese a lot and the joy it brings to their lives. I for one, love me some goat cheese. Some people do not, “Like the taste of live stock” as one friend of mine …

The Red Red Dirt of New Mexico

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 13, 2011

On  September 2nd  2011 just past the finish line in the mountains of New Mexico, one man’s life was changed forever. As the horses galloped out past the wire, after the sixth race at Ruidoso Downs, Jacky Martin’s mount, Phire Power broke down. Jacky fell from his mount and sustained injuries to his neck.  He is one …

Thanks a lot Pot Heads

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 13, 2011

I’d just like to say thank you pot heads for ruining my mountain. I would like to be able to enjoy the pristine mountain forests with out the worry that one day I will be out hiking and come across a fire arm guarded marijuana grow area.    This rant is brought to you by yesterdays drug …

The Crazy Cat Lady

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 9, 2011

Some people seem to be under the impression that I’m out here leading some crazy partying life style. When really? Not the case at all. Like what happened to me today.    Living in the mountains I don’t make it to Walmart to stock up very often. Okay one of the reasons is I can’t …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
