Squirrel Flu?

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, March 8, 2011

If you don’t like to read about bodily functions, then for God’s sake, don’t read this post!     In fact if your not comfortable hearing me talk about all my bodily problems maybe you shouldn’t be reading this blog at all?     Today’s problem; I’ve been sick for five days. I told my coworkers I have …

The Adventures of Creek Girl

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 3, 2011

Creek days with my best creek friend      The creek in summer is my sanctuary. There are a million places to hike down to Deep Creek between Big Bear and Hesperia in the high desert. I’ve hiked a good amount of them. When I was a kid we would hike through the Boy Scout Preserve …

The Fires, or the worst day of my life

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 31, 2011

The day I was evacuated from my home I drove down highway 18 with my radio off. I never drove without Shakira, Gretchen Wilson or the Cure blaring from my speakers. I had just packed up my two long haired cats, 15 scrapbooks of pictures and my oh-so-so-cal True Religion jeans, piled it all into …

Hike of death and some BBQ Turkey taco reward

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 24, 2011

Deep Creek in winter Ugh. I think tomorrow my whole body will be sore. I’m already sore from kick boxing yesterday so what do I do today?  Get up at dawn for a challenging hike to the creek. Okay well actually I got up at 6a.m. But I didn’t get home from work until …

Eating, fishing, sweating; A day in the the mountains

By Amber Woods on Thursday, January 20, 2011

This is a story about a girl, not your average girl. I was born and raised in Southern California. No I don’t surf. Honestly I can’t even swim. I live in the San Bernardino Mountains, and no I don’t Ski either.  And I definitely don’t snowboard. I don’t have blond hair, I’m a horrible dancer (but I love …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
