Life of a Degenerate Gambler

Its in my blood….

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, October 18, 2011

When people ask me why I love the sport of kings I say its in my blood. My great grandpa was also a huge horse racing fan. My family migrated across the United States from Boston in the 60’s, and my great grandpa left the hard luck track, Suffolk behind for Lucky Baldwin’s beloved …

An autumn afternoon at the race track

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Last week I drove to Santa Anita after work just to snap a few pictures of some of my favorite race horses. On second thought, maybe I should have stayed home and watched on T.V. Seeing as how, nearly every horse I photographed lost! This is The Factor, named after Bill O Reilly’s popular T.V. …

Lead me through this gorgeous day of hell

By Amber Wood on Monday, October 17, 2011

Sometimes when I’m hiking with Alicia I feel like my calve muscles are about to explode. Its not exactly a good feeling, but it means we’re out in the forest hiking and not sitting in front of the T.V. on a seventy degree fall day, probably, knowing us, betting on horse racing, and probably, …

Just another fall day at Walmart

By Amber Wood on Sunday, October 16, 2011

Because everyone enjoys me ranting about Walmart….     Right?    The other day I stopped at Walmart for two thing’s,      I needed to exchange my heating pad for one that stays warm longer then a minute and buy new ear buds. My old ear buds make me look quite comical as they are so tied …

Onxy Summit Hike

By Amber Wood on Friday, October 14, 2011

Even though its nearing Halloween, today it is almost eighty degrees in this mountain town. I’m in the mood to make some sausage and kale soup or maybe some roasted Autumn squash, but its a little to hot to turn on the oven today. So instead I’ll take my inflatable raft up to Big …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
