Going to the Woods is Going Home

Pastries and Earth Quakes?

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 26, 2013

When the toilet vibrates something is wrong.      I had just driven one third of the way home from my Eastern Sierras vacation. I had been up since five a.m. I ran ten miles in the mountains with a two thousand foot altitude gain and than hiked for a mile near Convict Lake.     I was a bit tired …

A Happy Birthday Sierras Style Celebration

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 25, 2013

I celebrated my birthday last week with some of the best friends a girl could ask for.    Most “great birthdays” don’t begin with waking up at three a.m. but this one did.    At three A.M. I left my mountain town and made a beeline for the Sierras where my friends had already set up …

Lake Sa-Brine-a

By Amber Woods on Saturday, August 24, 2013

I don’t know why I do such horrible things to my body.     This morning my body consumed       *1 coffee with cream      *1 banana almond milk almond butter smoothie      *1/2 a five hour energy      *One bran muffin      *One donuts      So I pretty much had a big bowl of sugar and caffeine with bran sprinkled on top.      …

Butulism and Repressed Childhood Memories

By Amber Woods on Thursday, August 22, 2013

Sometime I think I repress some memories of my childhood.   The thought of slimy lettuce brought me back to 1989 and the summer of the Whopper. I was just thinking  about the summer of ’89 the other day and eating frozen yet defrosted Whooper hamburgers st aright from the microwave for a whole summer. (My Dad’s …

Get out of this Town

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, August 20, 2013

I need to get out of this town!    The restaurant across the street from me has had a broken fan for days and the noise is epically loud.   It is making me crazy.   I live in the forest because I like the peace and the quiet. I love the pine trees, the deserted trails …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
