Hiking at Montano De Oro Tide Pools

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, March 11, 2014

I’m that friend that drags people on those hikes that make them want to lay down and die.     Years ago I took a good friend and his girl friend hiking to my favorite swimming hole, a five mile round trip hike in the hot sun.      We split the hike in half, stopping at …

Blood Orange Grapefruit Martinis with Ginger

By Amber Woods on Monday, March 10, 2014

As any great vacation should begin; the second day of camping meant recovering from the first day of camping!    We decided not to hike on our second day on thre Central Coast and instead do some touristy things.    My girlfriends had never been to the Central Coast before and I showed them around the …

Candied Ginger Oatmeal Cookies

By Amber Woods on Friday, March 7, 2014

I am so very lucky in that I only have been car sick one time in my life.        It was the very first time I entered the San Bernardino Mountains and those mountains took my motion sickness virginity.        If only I had known in 1985 how much ginger helps combat nausea.        When I was …

Hazard Peak Hike in Montano De Oro

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Montano De Oro is one of the most beautiful places in all of Southern California.     The camp ground is a little out of the way for a stay in the central coast area but it is just so pretty and so not crowded at all!  During the week you never need reservations in the off …

Camping Vs Sleep or why I Hate Robbie the Raccoon

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, March 4, 2014

I never seem to sleep very well on vacation in tents although I love to camp. Every vacation I go on seems to be packed full of fun activities like hiking, wine tasting, beach relaxing and off roading adventures. Whether it be driving in iceland or in the US, the adventure is always exciting. When …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
