Carrot Ginger Beet Breakfast Muffins

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 26, 2014

These muffins are essential for the first morning of any back packing trip.   If you want to poop in the forest on the second morning that is.   I had the great idea to throw these together while I was pondering what to do with the left over pulp from my carrots and beets when I …

Vivian Creek Trail Hike to High Creek

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

We should be counting our blessings that here we are in California on a seventy three degree February day.     We should be hiking in snow shoes instead of shorts.     I really, really wish we had some snow Usually February is a time when few people go hiking at San Gorgonio and the ones that …

Marcona Almonds; perfect trail snack

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 24, 2014

Even though my legs and butt are killing me from working out two days ago, I still managed to run nine miles today. How did I manage to pull my exhausted legs up and down nine miles worth of hills, over 2,400 feet of altitude gain? Marcona almonds.      These delicious almonds are such …

I Killed Bambi

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 23, 2014

I love driving in the mountains. There is nothing like driving fast in my Subaru on curving winding mountain roads with some good music blaring out the speakers, sun roof open, windows down, and the smell of the mountain pines all around me. I do not, however enjoy following people ALL THE WAY to …

Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail via Splinters Cabin in Cedar Glen

By Amber Woods on Friday, February 21, 2014

It’s February 12 2014 and I just spent half an hour sun bathing in a sports bra at 4,500 feet.     No this is not the fantasy of some one living in snowy Michigan right now.     This is southern California and yes I feel blessed to be a tan Californian sunning myself like …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
