Organic Garden vs. Satan’s Rodents: The Backyard Bloodbath

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 24, 2025

As a nature lover, I really don’t want to have rage in my heart when it comes to little varmints but all the relaxing lake days on earth can not soothe my soul when the local ground squirrels treat my front yard like Souplantation, Big Bear Lake. I have spent way too much of my …

Spice Aisle Safari: Hunting Flavors Across SoCal’s Ethnic Markets

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 20, 2025

Southern California—home to sunshine, surfboards, and a grocery store for every craving under the sun. You can’t go a block without stumbling across a new healthy market promising everything from gluten-free quinoa chips to hand-picked seaweed harvested by ancient monks (okay, maybe not that last one… but we can dream). If you’re tired of the …

Strawberry Muffins: Because Screaming into the Void Wasn’t Gluten-Free

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, July 15, 2025

It’s only 7 a.m. and I am already having such a Monday. There is nothing like being in the middle of mixing up a cake batter, opening a brand new bag of marshmallows to find it is chock-full of ants. As a lifelong baker, I have never had anything like this happen to me in …

Help, I Packed a Hair Dryer: A Beginner’s Guide to Backpacking

Leave the rosé at home, lace up those dusty trail runners (preferably not the neon ones from 2012), and prepare to traipse through the Inyo Wilderness for four soul-cleansing days of pure, unfiltered nature. That means sweating until you cry, sleeping on a rock that’s pretending to be a sleeping pad, and wondering why you …

Thrift Store Couture: How to Find Fashion Gold Without Smelling Like Aunt Martha’s House

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 7, 2025

We have all been there. You just thrifted the very best MAGA red sweater but OMG, there is a stain on the front in the shape of Elon Musk’s head. How could you possibly have missed that? I feel like when I go on a thrift store shopping mission, I tend to hit up so …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
