A Rum Cake My Butt Can Live With: Healthy-ish Anglo-Indian Christmas Cake

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 25, 2025

Ho ho ho and happy holidays to all—especially to my fellow Anglo-Indian Rum Cake and fruitcake fanatics. As much as I adore a boozy Christmas rum cake, I do not adore what it does to my butt, thighs, or sense of self-worth. Which is why this year, I’m reinventing one of my favorite holiday traditions: …

The Best Christmas Gifts for your Foodie Friends and Family

By Amber Woods on Saturday, December 20, 2025

I love surrounding myself with friends and family who love food the way I love food. These are my people—the ones who respond to my IG DMs at 6 a.m. with, “Yes, send the recipe,” instead of, “Why are you awake?” As the self-appointed Summit Snacker of the San Bernardino Mountains, it is my sacred …

Viral Christmas Cat Craft

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, December 16, 2025

Anyone who uses the term “I’m bored” does not have cats. I have friends who complain about boredom. I have never been bored a day in my life. I can’t even fathom what boredom might look like in a day filled with work, cleaning the house, trying to find me time on the high elevation …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
