India Here I Come!

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 6, 2016

Last month my boyfriend and were struggling up Meysan Lakes Trail in the hot July sunshine. Well I was bitching and moaning about seventy degrees at eight a.m. Being SO HOT. Sigh. I hope I survive India. When we go to India in four months I will not be hiking three thousand feet up a …

Shenanigans Where the Turf Meets the Turf

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 2, 2016

I don’t know if there could have been a better way to spend my birthday besides with these fantastic wagering ambassadors and friends. ( Unless I hit the pick 5) I am so truly blessed to have the most wonderful people in my life. It was a truly fantastic weekend in San Diego full of …

Chai Cashew Milk

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 29, 2016

I might feel unbelievable amounts of stress some days in my life, moments like this take away every ounce of doubt that everything will not be okay. When I’m sitting by a creek bed watching a thunder storm rolling in far in the distance. And best of all my dog is to tired after a sixteen …

Kennedy Meadows, The Beginning of the Eastern Sierras

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Kennedy Meadows felt like home. As I began the drive into the mountains after hours in the high desert and on the interstate getting back to the back roads and the pine trees sure felt good. I’ve read so many books on through hiking the PCT (The Cactus Eaters is one of my favorites)  and …

Snake Situation Awareness

By Amber Woods on Monday, September 26, 2016

Our first night in the eastern sierras I’m proud to say I did not shit myself. I know, I know, not simple life goals that most people take for granite but I hate snakes and as soon as I approached the campsite creek the first creature I saw was a snake. Luckily it was a Gardner snake …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
