Monster Eggs; or Why Dad is not allowed in the kitchen

By Amber Woods on Friday, November 6, 2015

One thing in life is guaranteed.     No not death.     Not taxes.     If Dad is in the kitchen, Mom is pissed off.     My Dad loves to cook and bake and it makes my clean freak mother crazy.     There is one thing my dad has always cooked very well;     My Dad makes the …

Crazy Cat Lady

Needles, Cats and Ponies

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 5, 2015

Today I crossed the line and I became one of those Californians people on the east coast must roll their eyes at. All because I was inquiring about acupuncture for my cat. I’m not sure if this puts me in the crazy cat lady category or the crazy holistic non GMO Californian category. Working at the race …

Amber Exacta Life of a Degenerate Gambler

Amber Exacta

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, November 4, 2015

It wouldn’t be the greatest day at work ever if it didn’t end with me writhing in pain in a public place, obviously having just embarrassed myself once again. This is why I should not leave the mountain and go to the city where there are people to stare at me as I publicly humiliate …

Brie, Mushroom and Puff Pastry Pizza

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, November 3, 2015

These days it’s not out of the blue for me to drive 800 miles a week round-trip between work, work and commuting to work, working my four-day weeks 20 hours total has me driving quite a bit. After experiencing the Hells of Southern California freeways four days a week it’s no wonder on our one-week …

Life of a Degenerate Gambler

Handi-Crapping Vs Handicapping

By Amber Woods on Sunday, November 1, 2015

I’m spending this gorgeous cold and windy autumn day ignoring the mountain trails calling my name. Orange and yellow leaves are coating my favorite hiking trails in a rainbow of falls brilliant colors this November Saturday and I’m curled up on the couch with my man and a carmel vodka spiked latte. It’s Breeders Cup …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
