It was Christmas time 2016 and we wanted to experience the holiday season somewhere hot and humid where we would not stop sweating for days. Let’s go to tropical Kerala India! Who does not need a tropical beach vacation sipping beer cocktails poolside during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? We left our …

The Colorful Streets of Bangalore

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Bangalore India is just a rainbow of bright colors. In the day time it’s the aqua blue apartments or the bright green and canary yellow rickshaws. Women walk the streets in bright pink and purple saris or kurtis and even on a cloudy and rainy Bangalore morning the streets are full of vibrant colors. When …

Some days I climb mountains. People ask me why I need to hike sweating on back roads and climb my way up mountains. They want to know why on earth would I need to burn 2,000 calories in a day. Because of this. That view blows me away everytime. And you have to hiken fifteen miles …

Disabled Cow Crossing

By Amber Woods on Sunday, December 18, 2016

This past Sunday morning I  felt like we walked out the front door of our apartment and into the set of a Bollywood movie. The early morning air was pulsing with the beat of India street festival music. This was my second morning in India and I had assumed I would be hesitant and intimidated to walk …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
