Where the Hell is Yost Lake?

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 29, 2018

I don’t know why hikers and other outdoor adventurers don’t talk about scenic Yost Lake out of June Lake. Maybe it’s the insane amount of altitude gain you hike upward in the first mile of this race up to resort level and the meadows. When I started this upward journey up above silent blue June …

Ten things no one ever told me about hiking Mt Whitney

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, July 24, 2018

The hike up the Mt Whitney Trail is not for the faint of heart, those afraid of heights or individuals who can’t deal with difficult situations. And it certainly isn’t for those who come-ill equipped, so make sure you have the best pack and boots (like those recommended on https://travelgearzone.com/best-gore-tex-shoes/) to take on the challenge. …

The Best Healthy Snacks for hiking the Mt Whitney Trail

New Year's fitness motivation

It’s a Tuesday morning in July, just after sunrise. I’ve already pounded out three miles all uphill, close to a thousand feet of elevation gain under my dirty, well they used to be pink and grey, once upon a time on a mountain, Saucony trail runners. The sun is just starting to peak out above …

One Beautiful Bastard of a Mountain

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 12, 2018

Sometimes mountains just don’t want to be climbed. It’s 7 p.m. And I’m sitting in a camp chair three thousand feet below Whitney Portal Campsite; Our lovely prereserved campsite in the alpine forest. I have not stopped sweating for a minute for the past ten hours between the 105-degree temperatures driving through the desert and …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
