Bienvenido to a Baja California Adventure!

By Amber Woods on Monday, March 12, 2018

It’s February twenty-second and Baja California has welcomed me with open arms on this winters day. While most of this nation is in a deep frost I enjoyed an amazing beach view complete with the dolphins frolicking and seagulls serenading me while sipping on my coffee this morning. Las Gaviotas, our beach villa of choice …

V is for Venison.. Part 2

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, March 7, 2018
Mt Baldy

Two days ago I was standing so close to the summit of Mt Baldy joking about venison. Man do I love me some venison. Throw it in a curry, slap it in a protein burger. Bambi’s may be cute but they are also delicious. Until they destroy your car. But jokes aside there is nothing funny …

Baja Style Fish “Taco” Protein Bowl with Green Cauliflower Rice

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 4, 2018

Most of my friends make fun of me when I tell them I’m going to the naked Korean day spa because of the wrinkly old naked Koreans. (I’m pretty sure I will be pretty wrinkly at 55 too so I’m not judging, just saying some Americans are afraid of the naked) I’m pretty sure in …

Spicy Cauliflower Rice and Purple Sweet Potato Breakfast Protein Bowls

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 25, 2018

How many mountains do I need to run up this week in order to eat as many protein bowls as I want? What if I start at sunrise and get in a two thousand calorie workout before work? The horses at work don’t care if I take a wet wipe sponge bath in the parking …

Gluten Free Curried Tempura Calamari

calamari

One year ago today we were waking up to eighty degree mornings in our rented apartment in Bangalore. There were no snowy mornings hiking through fresh powder. No walks with my dog in her fanciest sweater through alpine valleys. The only snowflakes we saw were the cheap plastic ones on our fake Christmas tree in …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
