I Will Always Love You, Meyer Lemon Ice Cream Cake

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 6, 2026

This morning, as I sweated my way up Agnew Pass in the Eastern Sierra, dreaming about eventually throwing my overheated body into Gem Lake at nearly 9,500 feet, I kept muttering one very motivational thought under my breath: If Dolly Parton could spend fifty years walking around in five-inch heels, I could make it up …

Air Fryer Chipotle Chicken: Because Takeout Prices have Become Ridiculous

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 3, 2026

This has been the summer when I have said hell no to turning my oven on. And it’s all thanks to my obsession with the air fryer. And yes, that even includes taking my air fryer on a camping trip, because It’s My Birthday and I will do what I want! Including inhaling my favorite …

No-Bake Coconut Ice Cream Cake: Because I’m Camping, Not Running a Bakery

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 30, 2026

Here in the rural mountain town of Big Bear Lake, California, you would think our local bakeries could manage to stay out of controversy. You have one job, small-town bakeries: make me fatter so I feel morally obligated to hike ten miles tomorrow. Sell me a croissant. Hand me a cookie. Charge me nine dollars …

Trust No One: A Survival Guide to Selling a Used Car

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, August 25, 2026

Back in my formative years, you know, when we still had to tape our favorite shows on the old VCR, Mulder told me to “trust no one,” and I still abide by those wise words from my favorite sci-fi cult classic, The X-Files. Aliens, shady government operatives, strange lights hovering over the desert—trust no one. …

Empire-Style Chicken Kabobs: Bangalore’s Answer to Boring Air Fryer Chicken

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 21, 2026

Is it hard to run from a bassu while wearing a traditional …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
