Pet Insurance; Is it worth it?

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 23, 2025

If my pets were as clumsy and accident-prone as I was, then hell yeah, I would get pet insurance for all of them. The rescue dog, however, is the athletic maniac who chews on donkey bones and runs fifteen miles every day in a land where we have cactus and rattlesnakes. That bitch needs pet …

Baja-Style Pickled Red Onions

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 19, 2025

Take my advice this winter season; Travel to Baja  California for the Baja-Style Pickled Red Onions; Stay for the wild-caught fresh lobster and oceanview accommodations at a fraction of what you will pay in California. When we spent seven days in Baja California last November, I’ll admit, I expected to gain weight on that little …

The Best Books I read in 2024

By Amber Woods on Saturday, February 15, 2025

Being injured sucks big time. As much as I adore a snowy day reading a gripping novel on the couch with a fire roaring away in the fireplace, I would rather be snowshoeing. I love our cozy home filled to the brim with snuggly forest cats and espresso-based coffee drinks but snowshoeing is my real …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
