An Outdoor Adventurers Guide to Surviving a Lightning Strike

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 3, 2021

Lightning can be a real bitch. That is if you are one of the 49 Americans struck and killed by lightning each year. Lightning strikes are no joke as anyone who has been around live lightning can tell you. But at the same time, I love the smell of rain, that petrichor aroma, the crash …

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 30, 2021

Summertime to our family means a month of hiking and camping all over the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. That usually means nothing but the best camp food. What says summertime camp food if not Carne Asada Fries (Over a salad of course) This July while trekking through the alpine mountains near Mammoth Lake, coming back …

As a travel blogger, who still wants to get out and explore this big ‘ol world even during a global pandemic, my vehicle is very crucial for my travel needs. I may not be jet-setting away to Kerala India these days but the wanderlust-filled traveler in me still has the desire to get out into …

San Bernardino National Forest; Cry-babies, Tesla’s, Temper Tantrums, Traffic

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 20, 2021

It was hot as hell in August of 1999 as I sat in my ancient pickup truck with the summer southern California sun beating down on me. I had sweat pouring down my back as I sat in my filthy 1985 pickup truck and I prayed, once again my Dodge truck would get me home …

The best of the best Summertime Fun in Lake Tahoe

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, August 11, 2021

“Hey, Fred! Who is that ugly ass dog?” “I’m really not sure Bob” This is the Monday morning conversation I was imagining between the two adorable marmots who yelled at my dog this a.m. on top of a mountain near the Nevada border. Mt Tallac had to be the best hike I did during my …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
