10 Great Fall Recipes if you Hate Pumpkin

By Amber Wood on Monday, October 11, 2021

I find food with pumpkin in it this scary. As someone who really can’t stand pumpkin pie or pumpkin spice anything I sure do love to grow pumpkins in my garden. Watching my baby pumpkin plants slowly emerge from the soil in our front yard brings me all kinds of autumn joy. When I …

Crackheads and Orange Poo. Welcome to California

By Amber Wood on Saturday, October 9, 2021

Once upon a time, I was very fat. I was also very disabled and spent basically 8 months of 2015 sitting on my front porch hugging an emotional support border collie with crazy eyes and crying because I was in so much pain I could barely walk to the toilet. Also, my employer of 15 …

How to Make your Home Smell like Fall and not Farty Felines

By Amber Wood on Monday, October 4, 2021

I love all the smells of fall. Autumn days mean breathing in the scents of cinnamon, cardamon and fresh leaves under my hiking boots. And then I drive home to our cabin full of farting pets. I love the scent of those cinnamon pinecones, cloves and orange essential oils. What I don’t love is all …

Jeremy Clarkson’s favorite Lamb Sheperds Pie

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Jeremy Clarkson made me do it. This week thanks to that good old British journalist I learned a lot about sheeping, got a big hankering for shepherd’s pie and then I had a hands-on sheep experience at over eight thousand feet. No, it had nothing to do with the sweetbreads found on Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm …

California National Forest Closure Adventures in Big Bear Lake

By Amber Wood on Thursday, September 23, 2021

In the last few days, I’ve trekked close to twenties miles, seen Cooper hawks and almost stepped in bear scat numerous times. How can I have so much forest fun legally with the current California national forest closure you may ask? And how is avoiding bear poo my idea of a good time? A slightly …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
