Breakfast of champions; Cashew Cookie Keto Protein Bars

By Amber Wood on Monday, April 14, 2025

This is the winter of my discontent, between almost no snow for my snowshoeing needs and a busted ankle. What is an outdoor adventure girl to do? If you asked Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon would definitely say write a long-ass poem. Back in the 1600’s low-carb was just not a thing and even the …

A Foodies Opinion of the Best Clam Chowder on the Central Coast

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, April 8, 2025

From Monterery to Big Sur to Pismo Beach, you may be asking yourself why on God’s green earth is that sea lion making that un-Godly sound? Or perhaps who has the best clam chowder on California’s Central Coast? I was evacuated from my mountain home in the alpine hamlet of Big Bear last month because …

Are there wild and wily wild burros in Big Bear Lake, California?

If you’ve ever been to Big Bear Lake and thought you saw a donkey casually strolling down the street, you weren’t imagining things. No, it’s not a reveler who’s had one too many margaritas at the local dive bar—those hoofed creatures are the legendary wild burros of Big Bear, and they have a history as …

The Best Low-Carb Pizza

By Amber Wood on Friday, April 4, 2025

After a morning spent snowshoeing, I’m ravenous for a low-carb lunch by noon. Thank God for low-carb pizza choices. The best part of this low-carb pizza lunch is you can have a different low-carb pizza every day of the week! I will totally admit I am a huge pizza snob. In my world, a good …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
