A Morning at Bear Creek

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, December 17, 2013

The last few mornings have been so epically beautiful up here in my mountain forest.        There is a storm moving in from the west and the clouds a thousand feet below me have been so gorgeous every morning as I’ve run down the mountain trails and into the rolling fog.         I …

Tandem Bike Adventure

By Amber Wood on Sunday, December 15, 2013

Yesterday I sat on a beach in the sunshine and did nothing.   Absolutely nothing.    It was fantastic.   That has to be one of life’s greatest pleasures, just feeling the sand between your toes and listening to the waves and feeling the sun shine on your skin.   The beach is two hours from my home, …

97 Switch Backs

By Amber Wood on Friday, December 13, 2013

I had been training to hike Mt Whitney for months.    Mainly I was just distance running with some longer hikes thrown in.    I felt like I was in okay condition to hike the twenty two miles of Mt Whitney, but I definitely could have trained harder if I had more time.    For weeks every one told …

A Chill in the Air

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Big Bear City might be the meth capital of Big Bear.     There are quite a few sad and desperate mountain towns in this area but Big Bear City has got to be one of the most pathetic of them all. Cars sit on blocks in front yards. Trash lines the streets. The houses …

I Think I Hate Stater Brothers?

By Amber Wood on Monday, December 9, 2013

I think I hate Stater Brother’s.    Ok I am one of those people who is way to obsessed with the grocery store, what my body consumes every day, how it’s grown and if the ingredients are genetically modified.    I read labels of most things I buy and I try to steer clear of most …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
