It’s autumn 2024 and you know what that means! Thrift store shopping for everything pumpkin to decorate the house! Buying everything pumpkin spice from Trader Joe’s! Purchasing so many pumpkins for household decorations! Actually here in October 2024 autumn is none of those things this year.Fall colors in Big Bear are one of the secrets …

The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Lake Tahoe

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 15, 2024

The alpine hamlet of Lake Tahoe is a doggie’s dream come true. When researching and scrutinizing the best Lake Tahoe dog-friendly hikes I came across a lot of info, but I had to dig deep to discover the more off-the-beaten-path hikes where I might actually find parking on the Fourth of July weekend. Sure, lots …

Peach Cardamom Cobbler Surprise

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, October 9, 2024

This first official weekend of autumn was not a busy one for me as Big Bear’s most highly-rated hiking guide. Unfortunately for our mountain community, the Line Fire is still burning basically out of control at well over 40,000 acres. For our local businesses, the smoky air may be choking us and the slowdown in …

Don’t be a Dick in Bear Country

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 3, 2024

We all love camping, but for fucks sake let’s try to be intelligent campers! Did I really need to use a F-bomb in the first line of this blog? I did. Because Victor the resident Lake Mary black bear was uselessly killed last month. This whole incident could have been avoided if other campers could …

Outdoor Fun in Big Bear Lake this Autumn when the National Forest is Closed

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 29, 2024

I’m always the first to say it “I can’t wait for fall” The oranges, yellows and reds of the Big Bear Valley make late September into October my favorite time of year in Big Bear Lake. This year is nothing but nothing but frustrating for this autumn lover. Due to the ongoing effects of the …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
