Outdoor Fun in Big Bear Lake this Autumn when the National Forest is Closed

By Amber Wood on Sunday, September 29, 2024

I’m always the first to say it “I can’t wait for fall” The oranges, yellows and reds of the Big Bear Valley make late September into October my favorite time of year in Big Bear Lake. This year is nothing but nothing but frustrating for this autumn lover. Due to the ongoing effects of the …

Beachside Chennai Fish Curry

By Amber Wood on Monday, September 23, 2024

We were cruising down Highway 99 towards Delhi in our thirty-four-foot caravan. It was one hundred and five degrees outside the doors of our Fleetwood rig as we approached Delhi. Delhi? Did I read that right? (Insert Indian nod here) The Indian food lover in me was intrigued. The sweaty camper in me was hot …

The San Gorgonio Twilight Zone Episode

By Amber Wood on Monday, September 16, 2024

Sometimes you run the mountain. Sometimes the mountain runs you. Old Grayback definitely made me her bitch today. That’s the life of a hiker and outdoor adventurer. Not every hike has you feeling athletic as you sweat, limp and okay maybe cry trekking up a 10,000-foot mountain in the fog, possibly soaking wet. I’ve hiked …

By Amber Wood on Saturday, September 14, 2024

We live in a world where we can never quite escape from social media and technology. Thank God for the hidden zen I can find at the naked Korean day spa. On a typical Monday morning, you are driving to work on a crowded congested Los Angeles freeway listening to Spotify. You have already seen …

How to Fuel Your Body Right for a Mt Whitney Summit

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, September 11, 2024

After I’ve spent the day trekking up a fourteen-footer treacherous mountain, man, am I craving a hard-boiled duck egg or maybe a healthy Banana Gluten-Free Breakfast Muffin! As a health-conscious hiker, I know I deserve a tasty treat and I want it to be filling, delicious and have the nutrition to power my body all …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
