Yes, you can have Snowshoe Adventures in Southern California

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 23, 2019

It’s those first chilly days of March and spring may be just a few days around the corner. That is the rumor anyway, started by 2019 gossip after that spunky groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow predicting an early end to this crazy winter. As I take my dog for a rain-soaked and …

Let’s all Enjoy the Super Bloom Like Adults and Leave No Trace

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 16, 2019

Something insane has happened in southern California and people are losing their minds, their sanity and their common sense. It rained. Yes, its called winter weather. People please calm down. There is really no need to panic. In the last few weeks, California’s drought may be over. What fantastic news but it is erasing people’s …

Winter Travel Tips; Smart Travel to your Snowy Mountain Destination

By Amber Woods on Friday, March 15, 2019

Imagine this; It’s a pristine snowy winter’s morning at the cabin you just bought from somewhere like zook cabins in the rural mountain town set amidst the pines. The morning air smells of wood smoke and pine sap from the surrounding wilderness as you stand on the front porch in your favorite Ugg’s and North …

The Hungry Mountaineer’s Favorite St Patrick’s Day Healthy Snacks

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 10, 2019

It’s St Patrick’s Day and that has everyone asking the question, just how Irish am I? Our families heritage is not Irish at all but somehow my dad has a red beard and both my brothers have red hair. Yet we are not Irish. I was over at my parent’s house recently and my dad …

A Salute to Johnnie

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 7, 2019

January, 2019. My day at work was ninety percent awesome and ten percent I need a beer. Today I tried to drive a golf cart for the first time. I more then less failed but now I can write “Can operate a golf cart” on my resume. I’ve driven an eighteen wheeler with thirty-two gears, …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
