Gluten-Free Candied Ginger Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, December 15, 2020

If it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Big Bear Lake, California then I’m probably dreaming about Christmas cake. Authentic Anglo Indian Christmas Cake is a two-day desert debacle that takes some planning to construct. First of all you can only find the candied fruit for this rum-soaked cake during Christmas time. And …

Happy holidays. Now please pass the jock itch cream.

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 10, 2020

In Gavin Newsom’s California happy holidays really means record unemployment and homeowners not being able to pay their mortgages. But of course, our governor’s family-run wineries can stay open for business! “Let them drink chardonnay” It’s the first week in December 2020 and I would love to be feeling the holiday spirit right now but …

South Indian Tamarind Eggplant Curry

By Amber Woods on Monday, December 7, 2020

What does one wear when going on a tropical vacation in a conservative county like Kerala India? Most things are quite easy to google in this day and age of 2020 but when we began planning our tropical Goa vacation over the last New Year’s Eve holiday season I could find very little information online …

Rose Cookies, a Christmas Baking Adventure

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 2, 2020

Spending the Christmas season in India in 2016 may have spoiled me for life. I discovered Rose Cookies and ate my body weight in Butter Chicken and Parathas. I absolutely loved our India Holiday adventure. Even when we were stuck in an India airport for eleven hours rewriting The 12 days of Christmas and coming up with …

Small Town Crazy Cat Lady

By Amber Woods on Friday, November 27, 2020

Calling a small-town ski resort community my home has some distinct advantages. Most of the time I adore being hours away from the smoggy metropolis of Los Angeles. I can only take the concrete jungle of southern California in very small doses. Life in Big Bear Lake in the pine forest can make me feel …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
