An Easy Thousand Island Trek

By Amber Wood on Friday, September 23, 2022

I am not in shape today to do a twenty-mile hike. But when the eastern Sierras call out your name and you have a week off work and wanderlust coursing through your veins, just what is a hiker babe to do? Hike those high country trails of course! The trek up to Thousand Island Lake …

Dear keto, I have enjoyed embracing your egg crepes and your zero-carb summertime pineapple jalapeno cocktails but you are not for me in the long run. Yes, keto, I may be breaking up with you. It’s been a fun six months of ketosis thanks to shirataki  Low Carb Broccoli Beef Chow Mein and keto low …

Let’s all try to Adult and not cause anymore California Wildfires

By Amber Wood on Saturday, September 17, 2022

As the most popular hiking guide in all of Big Bear Lake, I often have my vacation guests telling me how they love the sounds of the winds in the pines. As someone who has lived in these rural mountain towns for my whole life the wind in the pines causes me to have panic …

What the Hell is that Smell? A hike to Mammoth Rock

By Amber Wood on Thursday, September 15, 2022

The first time I trekked to the massive Mammoth Rock obviously it had to be an adventure. This hike features one of the most impressive views of the entire city of Mammoth Lakes down below this huge impressive granite structure. But seriously, how does no one talk about how bad the sulfur stink is here? …

Dark Chocolate Beet Cupcakes

By Amber Wood on Sunday, September 11, 2022

It takes me being in a lot of pain to convince me to take off my pants at the farmers market. But sometimes you just have to get out there and buy those organic beets even on the busiest day ever. And sometimes that may involve taking off your pants in front of a stranger. I …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
