Bears are Afraid of Boobs; A 8 Mile Hike up San Bernardino Peak Trail

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 2, 2014

The path up the mountain side was steep.  My calves were burning already and the hike had just begun a mile ago.   A mile ago at the beginning of the hike I remember thinking how easy the start of this hike is. You cross a babbling creek or raging river depending on what season it is. The …

Don’t date a Girl Who Travels

By Amber Woods on Friday, February 28, 2014

I love, love this article. Don’t date a girl who travels; She is more at home on the mountain trails on the peaks of the eastern Sierras than roaming the streets of Beverly Hills looking for the newest True Religion jeans. She wears North Face and water proof Tevas and not Tom’s. She may walk …

Carrot Ginger Beet Breakfast Muffins

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 26, 2014

These muffins are essential for the first morning of any back packing trip.   If you want to poop in the forest on the second morning that is.   I had the great idea to throw these together while I was pondering what to do with the left over pulp from my carrots and beets when I …

Vivian Creek Trail Hike to High Creek

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

We should be counting our blessings that here we are in California on a seventy three degree February day.     We should be hiking in snow shoes instead of shorts.     I really, really wish we had some snow Usually February is a time when few people go hiking at San Gorgonio and the ones that …

Marcona Almonds; perfect trail snack

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 24, 2014

Even though my legs and butt are killing me from working out two days ago, I still managed to run nine miles today. How did I manage to pull my exhausted legs up and down nine miles worth of hills, over 2,400 feet of altitude gain? Marcona almonds.      These delicious almonds are such …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
