Chai Cashew Milk

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 29, 2016

I might feel unbelievable amounts of stress some days in my life, moments like this take away every ounce of doubt that everything will not be okay. When I’m sitting by a creek bed watching a thunder storm rolling in far in the distance. And best of all my dog is to tired after a sixteen …

Kennedy Meadows, The Beginning of the Eastern Sierras

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Kennedy Meadows felt like home. As I began the drive into the mountains after hours in the high desert and on the interstate getting back to the back roads and the pine trees sure felt good. I’ve read so many books on through hiking the PCT (The Cactus Eaters is one of my favorites)  and …

Snake Situation Awareness

By Amber Woods on Monday, September 26, 2016

Our first night in the eastern sierras I’m proud to say I did not shit myself. I know, I know, not simple life goals that most people take for granite but I hate snakes and as soon as I approached the campsite creek the first creature I saw was a snake. Luckily it was a Gardner snake …

Cloud’s Rests Confusion

By Amber Woods on Saturday, September 24, 2016

When I saw the dead deer in the middle of the highway I should have realized that was a bad sign. It was six a.m. and barely light out but just enough sunlight eased over the mountain pass to make out a dead Bambi at the trailhead? I think? I had researched the Clouds Rest …

Crock Pot Brat Extraviganza

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 22, 2016

Once upon a time in a far away land surrounded by bier, brats and more bier and brats I celebrated Oktoberfest the right way. By drinking vats of bier and ingesting thousands of currywursts for five days straight. I also slept in a soggy tent in a field smelling like mold and enjoyed not having …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
