Sweet Potato Cornbread Donuts

By Amber Woods on Monday, November 20, 2017

We are lucky enough to live in a resort town where we get to see some truly gorgeous fall colors in southern California. As soon as the nights start getting a little colder at our 7,000 foot home of Big Bear Lake, the oaks, aspens and maples start to change colors and our mountain resort …

Butternut Squash, Cranberry and Pancetta Cornbread Stuffing

By Amber Woods on Monday, November 13, 2017

You know its those first few chilly days of fall if you find yourself splitting two cords of wood with a stuffy nose and pockets full of tissues before autumns first storm rolls in. I spent all morning working my way through biscuit after biscuit of pine with our splitter, while watching the fog slowly …

Parathas, Roti’s, Puri’s and Vada’s Oh My! How to Find India’s Ethnic Food in America

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 9, 2017

If you live in a larger metropolis town like Los Angeles or Chicago then you may have all kinds of ethnic grocery stores within walking distance perhaps. Living at 7,000 feet in a well-known southern California ski town we are hours away by car to the nearest natural, organic or ethnic grocery store. It sucks …

Curried Eggs with Avocado and Purple Sweet Potatoes

By Amber Woods on Monday, November 6, 2017

I simply adore my small town Big Bear Lake life; trail running, mountain biking and just breathing in the crisp cool and clean air amongst the pines of this resort town. In the valley below this rural mountain hamlet you would not even know that it’s fall. It’s over a hundred degrees most October days! …

Brown Rice Protein Bowl with Fennel, Pesto and Argentine Shrimp

By Amber Woods on Monday, October 30, 2017

It was September 16th and overnight autumn was here with chilly breezes, ripe golden delicious apples on the trees and pine needles covering the back yard pavers. Life in a small mountain resort town at 7,000 feet means when fall shows up at our doorstep, summers hot days are definitely over almost before you can say …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
