Oatmeal with Protein Powder and Candied Almonds

By Amber Woods on Sunday, June 25, 2017

It’s finally, finally springtime at our  7,000 foot mountain town and you know what that means! Snakes? Wildflowers? Kittens? Or mountain biking twenty miles a morning? Springtime in a resort town means all these things (My friend works at the local pet store… That is where miles of kittens come into the picture…) If it …

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 22, 2017

When I was a five year old little girl I wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. I have no recollection of ever uttering the words “Mommy I want to be a truck driver” but my mom has a drawing I made from kindergarten of cartoon five year old me driving an …

My Mountain Bike; Another Man’s Treasure

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, June 14, 2017

I’ve put hundreds of miles on this mountain bike. Today it’s time to say goodbye. In the past year I’ve gotten bugs in my teeth while riding single track trails. I’ve had bees hit me in the face while flying down mountain dirt roads. I got a fly stuck in my contact lens that one …

Today I caught the biggest fish of my life. What do you do with the biggest fish ever to be caught on Big Bear Lake? Well you obviously make homemade trout cat food! I try to eat extremely healthy and processed junk food is not the kind of diet that fuels my body. Why would …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
