Nothing but Brothels and Donkeys

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 24, 2013

We were flying through the vast Nevada desert Listening to the boss Bruce Springsteen blast through the cars speakers. Out here in Northern Nevada there was absolutely nothing to see for hours but but whore houses and donkeys.      Where else in the United States can you say that? Northern Nevada is a …

Ankle Pain Snake Ow

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 22, 2013

I smell bad, real bad. I just ran fifteen miles and now I’m sitting at Urgent Care wondering if my ankle is broken. Lucky I knew where I was going, otherwise I might have been sat searching for the nearest Urgent Care places. At least I know that there are loads of Urgent Care places …

Shepherds Pie with a Cheddar Puff Pastry Crust

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 20, 2013

Friday night in the mountains with friends means baking a puff pastry covered Sheperd’s Pie and bleeding all over my kitchen.       I know, I know, most of my recent stories are ripe with bodily fluid incidents.       I did not mean to get my thumb stuck in the …

In Alaska with Five Hundred Dead Mosquitos

By Amber Woods on Friday, October 18, 2013

When we had arrived in Anchorage a week earlier we had looked like the poster children from sunny southern California, our tans, white teeth and sandals clearly making us stand out amide the sweat pants, and work boots of the locals. Now after spending three days in the bush, well we definitely smelled like …

Altitude Sickness; It’s Really Not so Fun

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 17, 2013

A friend asked me today if I had ever had shin splits with all the running I do.   No but I’ve had Shin Shits!   Haaahhaaahaaa!    Oh wait, is that only funny to me?    I guess it’s funny now, because I’m wearing clean pants.     It was not funny when I was twenty two years old, …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
